On a team with very few upperclassmen, the Ohio State men’s basketball team looked to the leadership of junior Jason Singleton last night.Singleton, a 6-foot-6, 200 pound forward from Detroit , Mich. is one of the key players that holds the Buckeyes together. As a three-time all-state selection at Southgate Aquinas High School and an All-American as a senior, Singleton proved that he was ready for big time basketball.A communications major, Singleton lead the Buckeyes in scoring with 23 points against Kent St.. In last nights game, OSU was leading Kent St. at the half by four points, but then spread the margin with the help of Singleton’s scoring. He scored 17 second-half points and added two assists and seven rebounds. However, his leadership is more than just the points he put up in the game.”I just try to work hard and try to lead by example,” Singleton said. “(I) Let the players see me working hard in practice and on the court, and then hopefully it will rub off on them.”His leadership really carries onto the court, where a dunk became more than simply two points on the scoreboard. With a little over two minutes left in the game and the score 68-57, OSU, Singleton went down the lane and finished with a serious dunk over three Kent St. players. The dunk not only pushed OSU’s lead up to 13, but it energized the rest of the team as well as the fans. “I loved it, I loved it. I t was a great dunk,” guard Carlos Davis said. “It didn’t seal the game, but it got our emotions going back and it got the bench into the game.” OSU head coach Jim O’Brien was pleased by the play of his junior forward around the basket.”I thought that Jason was very good tonight in and around the basket, finishing some plays,” O’Brien said. The only week spot for Singleton was his free-throw shooting. He shot only one of eight from the charity stripe, while the rest of the Buckeyes shot nine of twenty-one. When questioned about his poor free throw shooting, Singleton answered like a true leader, not simply shifting the blame.”I think it’s more mental for me. I didn’t have a problem at all shooting free throws last year, and this year I’m just in a slump,” Singleton said. “I’m going to get out of that. I’ll just have to work an it and stay mentally focused.”
