Student representatives continued their pursuit of student legal services and debated the ethics of alcohol in the Schottenstein Center Wednesday at the USG Senate meeting.Vice President of Student Affairs, David Williams II, was on hand to discuss both issues with the senators.Williams supported the idea of legal services being offered for students through the university.Although he saidthat a student legal service program would benefit the campus, he said he did not favor a “negative check-off,” the way student health insurance is offered. When registering for classes, students must indicate that they do not want student health insurance otherwise they are billed for the service. If legal services were offered in the same manner, Williams said, it could lead to other groups seeking negative check-offs for their services. When asked why OSU put such an emphasis on preventing binge drinking when it’s promoting alcohol in the new arena, Williams said that there is a distinction between binge drinking and alcohol use.He said that selling alcohol at the Schottenstein Center’s luxury boxes is an economically wise decision.”The suites have a better chance to be sold at the price we want to sell them at if we sell beer and wine,” Williams said.He said that any campus that ever succeeded in the battle against alcohol has been totally dry.
