After the Ohio State Buckeyes suffered their first loss of the season to the then unranked Minnesota Golden Gophers on Saturday many people were left dumbfounded and were asking one common question: What happened to junior defensive back Nate Clements?Clements was continually beat to the ball Saturday by receiver Ron Johnson who had eight catches for 163 yards and one touchdown. Seven of the eight catches came on third down to keep Gopher drives alive. After the game Johnson said he was not impressed with Clements’ play.”I feel we can score on anybody,” he said. “They thought he was a good enough corner to check me by himself and they paid the price for that. On paper they may have been No. 6 in the country, but we wanted it more and we worked harder to play good.”Clements, who considers himself one of the best cornerbacks in the nation agreed with Johnson.”Johnson came to play,” he said. “I guess I didn’t come to play and he just made some plays. I give credit to Johnson. He played a heck of a game. He just outplayed me.”Clements said he will use the game as a learning experience. He said he needs to read the coverage more accurately and break on the ball better.”Some days you might not be on. Some days you are, so I’m just trying to be on all the time,” he said. After the game many fans and critics alike were left asking themselves if the game would cause Clements to lose confidence in his ability.”He sure didn’t gain any (confidence),” said coach John Cooper laughing. “Nate Clements is a good football player. I think it’s a deal where he tried to make a play early in the game and didn’t make it and got burned a little.”We put him in some tough situations. You put him out there on an island against a good receiver and it’s hard, it really is, but Nate made some good plays for us.”Cooper said he was not worried about Clement’s poor play carrying over to the Iowa game this Saturday.”He’ll be back, just like the rest of our football team,” Cooper said.Senior linebacker and captain Joe Cooper said he believes in Clements and is confident the Minnesota game was a one time thing.”It doesn’t shake our confidence at all,” he said. “I’m pretty sure no one in this world has woken up every single day and had the greatest time in his life. One time in your life you’re not going to have your greatest game. He (Clements) didn’t have his greatest game, but you know as a defense we didn’t have a great game either.”We are not questioning ourselves at all because we are confident in Nate. He is a great cornerback and he’ll continue to do a great job for us the remainder of the season, as will this defense. We had a letdown, but we are fine.”Clements said he has put the game behind him and is focusing on Iowa.”That game is behind us,” he said. “We’ve got to get ready for the Iowa game.”He said his will is not broken and he will continue to play like he has been all season.”My confidence is still there,” he said. “I’m still the same person I was. I still feel in my heart what I am capable of doing.”
