Slick roads and rainy weather didn’t keep loyal customers of Cluck-U Chicken from enjoying one last meal from the corner of High Street and 11th Avenue.
On Thursday, Cluck-U’s High Street location was forced to close its doors in order for environmental remediation, the removal of asbestos and other potentially hazardous material, to begin in Campus Partners’ Gateway project. Cluck-U Chicken was among five properties that Campus Partners had been reserving for the University Gateway Center. Three of the properties, Cluck-U, The Singing Dog, and Greek Village Gyros have already made definite relocation plans.
By February 7, Cluck-U Chicken will be relocating to a new store at 2620 N. High St.
Mike Julien, manager of Cluck-U, is not sure how the move will affect business. “We have such a prime location here on High Street. By moving away from this spot we may lose a lot of business,” he said.
Stephanie Miller, a senior in communications, often went to Cluck-U’s High Street location for a late night snack. “We’d usually end up at Cluck-U after a night at the bars so I guess it’s a little upsetting that we can no longer go somewhere so close to home. But, since they’ll still be delivering, they can come to me,” she said.
“We get most of our business after 2 a.m. from kids going back to the dorms. Leaving this area will most likely be bad for our business,” said Walid Toson, an employee of Cluck-U Chicken.
Although moving may cause a loss of revenue to Cluck-U, Julien feels that the new University Gateway Center will be beneficial to south campus and hopes that once the project is completed, Cluck-U will return to the area.
