Giant Eagle is accepting BuckID at its new grocery store located near campus at 2801 N. High St.
“Giant Eagle is committed to offering the OSU student body the same opportunities they had with Big Bear. We look forward to providing the Ohio State student body with what they need and want,” said Michael Duffey, spokesman for Giant Eagle.
Giant Eagle, Inc. acquired eight former Big Bear stores in Columbus last year, which had opening celebrations yesterday. The stores had been briefly closed for re-stocking, re-merchandising and to improve product presentation and displays.
Giant Eagle’s convenient location, BuckID acceptance and 24 hours of operation make it an important area business for OSU students and faculty.
“I’m just glad they got a new grocery store in there,” said Amanda Hartley, an undecided sophomore.
Wide selections of produce, meats, seafoods and specialty items are among the improvements.
“The produce looks better. There is a greater selection, and the quality seems better,” said Clintonville resident Jon Becker. Its also good that Giant Eagle has hired many former Big Bear employees, he said.
“I liked the Big Bear employees and the managers; I am glad to see so many of them still here,” Becker said.
Some shoppers have thought about changing store loyalties.
“I usually shop at Kroger,” said Andy Brown, a junior in music. “I think I’ll start coming here though – it’s a lot nicer.” Brown was impressed with the store layout, general appearance and variety, he said.
Grand opening celebrations will continue throughout February with special in-store events, food tasting and sweepstakes. The Columbus sweepstakes include prizes such as a two-year lease on a 2004 HUMMER H2, a 42″ JVC Plasma TV and $500 worth of free groceries.
Giant Eagle stores will also have appearances by Columbus Blue Jacket players and the team mascot. The campus store will feature right winger David Vybornyn from 5 to 6 p.m. tomorrow.
