Students interested in owning their own business will receive professional expertise tomorrow at “How to Create Your Own Practice,” the next lecture in the Professional Development Series.
A doctor, two lawyers and a dentist will be on hand to present the pros and cons of their professions, detailing the different aspects of owning and running their businesses successfully, said Kelly Hill, a graduate student in business and facilitator of the lecture.
“The goal is to have the different people from different professions come in and give the positives and negatives about having their own practice,” she said.
The professionals will give students an inside look at positions they might be thinking of pursuing. There are many aspects of owning a practice that some may not think of before going into it, Hill said.
“There are certain laws that apply to each different profession that, because you are the owner, you need to be aware of,” Hill said. “There are a lot of things that they need to know. It’s different having your own practice from owning a corner deli.”
Kai Landis, coordinator of Student Involvement, said she hopes the lecture will give those in attendance the basic and professional development exposure they do not get in class.
“They will learn basic information from the ground up,” Landis said. “They will get information on how to create a business plan, find a location and get legal information. Basically, they are telling them the 10 steps of creating a practice from ground zero.”
Landis said the professionals will share stories with the students about their personal experiences and answer any questions.
The lecture is open to all students but is geared toward professional students.
“We want them to make sure they make educated decisions about their future,” Hill said. “I would expect they would get a full, well-rounded idea about having their own practice. It can help them decide whether they want to wait a few minutes or work for someone else before jumping into their own practice.”
The lecture will be held in the Memorial room of the Ohio Union at 4:30 p.m. The graduate and professional student division of the Ohio Union Activities Board hosts the Professional Development Series, which holds events twice per quarter.
