The Ohio State field hockey team was unable to break through against Louisville’s defense on Sunday, resulting in a final defeat of 1-0.
The only score of the game by Louisville (8-5) occurred only 10 minutes into the first half after sophomore Lotta Kahlert tipped in a shot off a penalty corner.
OSU (7-5) lagged behind in shots 8-3 in the first half and 4-1 for the second, but sophomore goalie Liz Tamburro, leading the Big Ten in saves, helped the Buckeyes push forward with six total saves. The Cardinals’ Ayeisha McFerran made three saves, all in the first half.
The game was almost tied in the second half when senior forward Peanut Johnson had an unassisted tally, but it was ruled to be outside of the circle, keeping the score stagnant. For the remainder of the game, both teams kept a strong defense — so far this year, Louisville has only allowed 15 goals — seventh fewest in the nation.
OSU’s shots came from junior forward Brooke Hiltz, freshman midfielder/forward Casey Cole, sophomore forward/midfielder Maddy Humphrey and freshman midfielder Hanna Scherpbier.
OSU is set to continue its home stand on Friday, as it’s scheduled to play host to Big Ten rival Indiana (6-7) at Buckeye Varsity Field for its annual “Pink Game” in order to raise awareness for breast cancer research.
