Film buffs and movie lovers who want to share more than just popcorn and Junior Mints will gather tonight at The Drexel Theatre to share their thoughts as well. The Drexel, in conjunction with the OSU Photography and Cinema Alumni Society, will present “The Spanish Prisoner” tonight at 7:30 p.m. with an informal discussion to follow. The film is part of the ongoing “Talk Cinema Tuesdays” series at the theater.”We introduce the film briefly, watch it and then sit in the theater for about 30 minutes or so and discuss,” said Holly Longfellow, president of the Alumni Society. “If people want to continue discussion, we retire to the Drexel Radio Cafe for coffee, cake or whatever.”Longfellow said the Society also sponsors a monthly movie screening and discussion at the Columbus Museum of Art, showing mostly older films.”At the Drexel, we get the opportunity to screen and discuss current, contemporary films,” she said. “But with new films, it’s tough to advertise and let people know about this ahead of time because we don’t know what movie we’re going to present until a week or so before we do it.”Kathy Frank, co-owner of the Drexel, said screening new films for discussion is good because it gives people who have yet to see the film the experience of seeing and sharing it with a group.”This is really an in-depth experience as opposed to going to a huge theater, watching the movie, and then getting into the car and leaving and maybe making a few comments to the friend you came with,” Frank said. “This is an opportunity to really get into what you thought about the movie.”Frank said the post-film discussions are not strictly structured and sometimes get quite heated.”People really enjoy sharing their opinions,” Frank said. “Sometimes those opinions are opposite and that makes it fun. Some lively discussions occur. This is not a lecture ‹ the Alumni Society hosts are there to stimulate and get people to open up and talk.”Sometimes controversial things come up. Discussing a filmmaker’s motivation for doing things usually gets a big response.””The Spanish Prisoner” was written and directed by Pulitzer Prize winning playwright David Mamet and stars Campbell Scott, Rebecca Pidgeon and Steve Martin. It is rated “R.”Tickets for the movie and discussion are $6 for the general public and $4 for students and members of the OSU Photography and Cinema Alumni Society.Tonight’s film will be introduced by Longfellow and retired OSU Photography and Cinema professor Clay Lowe.
