The Ohio State men’s gymnastics team scored a season high of 227.90 to defeat gymnastics powerhouses Oklahoma (226.6) and Nebraska (226.3) Friday night in Oklahoma.’This really is a huge win for us,’ said junior Mike Canales. ‘Both teams have been tough in the past and it was fun to beat Oklahoma, who placed second in the NCAA finals last year, in their own gym.’The Buckeyes, ranked fourth in the nation, improved their record to 8-2 overall and 2-0 in the Big Ten.Leading the Buckeyes was junior Mike Morgan who won the all-around competition to score a career high of 57.25. Morgan also won the floor exercise (9.65), tied for first place on the vault (9.7) with freshman teammate Jamie Natalie, and also tied for first on the parallel bars (9.65) with Buckeye junior Tim Elsner.’We pulled together as a team and that is what brought us through the meet,’ Morgan said. In addition to his win on the parallel bars, Elsner also placed third in the all-around competition with a total score of 56.35.’Of course it makes me happy to do well individually,’ Elsner said. ‘But team consistency and how I help out the team as a whole is much more important to me.’Natalie also won on the pommel horse (9.7), tying with Oklahoma’s Todd Bishop, and tied for third on the still rings (9.7) with OSU senior Peter Landry.The Buckeyes next meet is on Feb. 21 at Happy Valley against Big Ten opponent Penn State.OSU’s record against Penn State is 13-9. Last year, OSU broke a school record against Penn State with a team score of 232.45. ‘We will definitely be ready to face Penn State in two weeks,’ Morgan said. ‘We are getting better at pulling ourselves together and we are constantly improving.’
