Imagine songs that range in style from a James Bond ode to sweet three-part harmony that dares you to turn away. Now meet Tuscadero’s spunky “My Way or the Highway,” its new release from Elektra Entertainment.Tuscadero originally hit the scene with their debut “The Pink Album,” in 1994. The Washington, D.C. band is comprised of Melissa Farris, Margaret McCartney, Jack Hornady and Phil Satlof. With special accompaniment by cello, violin and trumpet, the nuances and style change as often as the song topics, offering a fresh, new treat for the ears.In “Dr. Doom,” the song is vaguely reminiscent at first, but the truth doesn’t hit until about halfway through the song. Complete with full orchestration and a huge finale, the track could easily join Tina Turner’s “Goldeneye” or Paul McCartney’s “Live and Let Die” in the James Bond theme song hall of fame. The lyrics also fit the image with lines like “Foreboding on a sunny day/You’ve come to chase the fun away/It’s you, Dr. DoomIt’s always been you.””Paper Dolls” offers a different mood with a more somber sound and lyrics about not accepting someone else’s idea of beauty. Referring to “carbon-copy-cookie-cutter-phony-little-paper dolls,” Farris urges listeners to discard advertising’s images of beauty and realize that “Beauty takes all kinds/Especially if love is blind.”Other tasty offerings include “Tiny Shiny Boyfriend” and “Cathy Ray,” two upbeat, lighter pieces that contrast the more serious “Hot Head” and “Evil Eye.”The crowning touch is, fittingly enough, the last song “Mutiny.” It draws you in with a band first, three-part harmony by Farris, McCartney and Hornady. The song keeps you riveted with words about that person you just can’t get over. “Do your arms reach across a half empty bed to hold the one they knew/Maybe it’s me they seek/I spend my nights not trying to dream of you,” Farris sings and finally captures the thoughts we’ve always wanted to say but could never put into our own words. With a rockin’ sound and killer lyrics, Tuscadero definitely has something to brag about. “My Way or the Highway” has never been such an easy decision.
