The goofy demeanor, yet solid musicianship of the Canadian combo Barenaked Ladies is evident once again in their seventh album titled “Maroon.” Ed Robertson, Steven Page, Jim Creeggan, Kevin Hearn and Tyler Stewart are following up their successful record of 1998, “Stunt,” with 12 new original songs.Their light-hearted, not-to-be-taken-seriously lyrics continue to entertain listeners. The songs on “Maroon” mostly consist of catchy, creative, sing-a-long melodies dealing with the trauma of relationships, the humor behind breaking up, and the usual BNL love song ballads. They also triumphantly attempt to touch on deeper issues of life, death and everything in between. Many songs are highlighted by unusual instruments such as the glockenspiel, cowbells, castanets and wah-wah shakers.Their single currently receiving radio play, “Pinch Me,” is full of sarcastic optimism. BNL’s vocalist, Robertson declares, “It’s the perfect time of year/Somewhere far away from here/I feel fine enough I guess/Considering everything’s a mess.”The song “Conventioneers” is an unconventional love song. Page’s lead vocals are soothing as he suggests he “Followed your perfume out away from all the rabble/Right up to your room for a drink and travel Scrabble.”BNL touches on the subject of struggling for success in “Sell, Sell, Sell” as they describe the story of a starving artist.BNL’s style may be becoming fairly predictable, however their sense of humor is never lacking. If you are already a BNL fan, add “Maroon” to your collection. It sounds strikingly similar to their previous albums – which is not necessarily a bad thing. The Barenaked Ladies’ fall tour which includes the hilariously entertaining band, Guster, hits Columbus on Oct. 21 at Nationwide Arena.
