“The Hitcher,” is the latest in a long line of horror updates. Although there are some redeeming qualities of this film, it will leave viewers stranded.
The film is similar to the 1986 original. A deranged hitchhiker terrorizes the stranger nice enough to offer him a ride.
Dave Myers, more known for directing edgy videos for Missy Elliott, Britney Spears and Janet Jackson directs the updated version.
New comer Sean Bean portrays the hitchhiker who catches rides, kills passengers and then steals their cars, in pursuit of a college couple on a road trip through New Mexico for Spring break.
As an avid fan of horror movies, it was an all too familiar frustrating feeling to watch this incoherent, downward spiral. When will makers of horror movies realize that it takes more than scaring people to make a decent flick? Although there are plenty of bloody and gruesome parts that will leave you stunned, “The Hitcher,” like most horror films, lacks the essentials of a good movie.
Starting out with scenes that jolt the audience back into their seat, the first half of the film is memorable. But poor character decisions lead to a declining story quality, which lead to a loss of appreciation for the knee-jerk suspense.
There are some factors help make the movie not a complete waste. There are realistic special effects layered with gory death scenes, not exactly intended for the faint-hearted.
Although fast-paced and intense, this crumbling plot fell flat. With a disappointing ending to a movie that seemed to have a promising beginning, “The Hitcher” will leave viewers wanting to hitch a ride out of the theater. Tally this one up as just another lame horror flick.
