We are always told that if we give it our best shot everything will work out okay. Unfortunately, sometimes someone else’s best shot is just a bit better than ours. That was the case for the women’s golf team this weekend as the defending champion Buckeyes finished second to Indiana at the Big Ten Championships. The Buckeyes left the course at University Park, Pa. with feelings of frustration but were not disappointed with their effort.”We played great but IU just played better,” said senior captain Marisa Wilhelm. “We defended our title well but IU just had a great weekend.”The Buckeyes actually shot lower rounds than their season average of 305 in three of the four rounds. The team turned in scores of 298, 307, 303 and 301 to finish with a score of 1209, 13 shots behind the Hoosiers’ 1196.Wilhelm finished in 10th place at +15. She set a final round record with a 72 on Sunday to finish with a 303.”I didn’t even know it was a record when I shot it. I just wanted to turn in a good score for the team,” said Wilhelm.Junior Natalie Mosher lead the Buckeyes with a +13 301, two strokes behind co-medalists Erin Carney from Indiana and Stacey Bergman from Iowa.Mosher was in the lead going into the final round but fell off pace with a 77 on Sunday.”My putts just didn’t fall as much as I would have liked them to,” said Mosher. “I was just trying too hard.”A week after being crowned medalist of the Lady Buckeye Invitational, senior Bethany Overstake finished tied for seventh with a +14 302.”She’s had a great spring. She’s just been playing really solid,” said Hession.Sophomore Lisa Strom tied for 18th at +19 while freshman Laura Patrick tied for 43rd at +32. In just her second tournament since recovering from a back and neck injury, sophomore Amber Amstutz finished at +20, good for 21st place. The Buckeyes return to action this weekend in Durham, N.C. for the NCAA East Regionals. Because of their experience in competitive winter tournaments, the Buckeyes like their chances this weekend.”We’ve seen this kind of field all year. Most people are intimidated but we’ve seen these teams all year and we know we can compete with them,” said Wilhelm.Hession agreed.”We’ve played against a lot of national competition this year so we should be very confident this weekend.”
